About Me

It is my mission to teach in a way that is student centered.

I want students to enjoy school. Maybe you are thinking that deserves a big "duh," and maybe it does.

While this has always been my view, and I venture to guess it's your view too, it did not become my mission until my son started kindergarten this year. Three months into his first year of school he was saying the words no teacher-mama wants to hear, "I hate school." He began trying to come up with reasons that he didn't need to go on particular days, sickness, fake limps, and a significant mood change in the car on the way there. Breaks. My. Heart.

Don't get me wrong, it's not the teacher I blame, it's the system. Too many kids, not enough resources, and not enough support to deal with mounting challenges and pressures, and guess what, it's affecting our kids. The only thing we as teachers have immediate control over is what happens when our students walk through that door.

I never want my students or children to hate school. I am starting on a personal journey to make education, at least in my corner of the world, student centered. I know, it's a really crazy concept. Students need to enjoy what their doing, and care about what they are doing. I think it goes without saying that you do better at something if you enjoy it.
So, here goes. This is my journey to learning, and yes some laughs.
